As with any dental procedures, some people may worry that it hurts to get porcelain veneers. Although every person’s experience of discomfort is unique and we can’t speak for your experience, we can say that in general there is little discomfort associated with the porcelain veneer process. This means you can achieve your beautiful celebrity smile, pain-free.
Preparing for Porcelain Veneers
Before we start your procedure, we will show you an image of what your smile will look like with veneers. This will help you decide if the procedure is right for you. If it is, we will move forward onto the preparation step.
In order to do porcelain veneers right, we must remove a small amount of tooth enamel from your teeth. This makes room for the veneers so that they can fit snugly on your teeth, won’t look bulky, and don’t create a shelf that can trap food and shelter bacteria. During this part of the procedure, you might wonder does getting veneers hurt? Rest assured, this is the least comfortable part of your procedure.
Although the amount of material removed is very small, typically half a millimeter or less, but still some worry that removing this material might cause discomfort. This is generally not true, but we still offer local anesthetic during this step. Afterward, there may be some soreness from the pressure on the teeth, but this is controllable with over-the-counter medications. You don’t have to worry that veneers hurt.
Temporary Veneers
Once we finish preparing your teeth to receive your veneers, we will send the order for your veneers to a lab where they will manufacture your veneers to our exact specifications of material, size, shape, and color. During this time, you will be wearing temporary veneers.
Some people experience excess sensitivity when wearing temporary veneers. These are not as sturdy or insulating as your final veneers, so you can expect sensitivity to heat and cold. Please note that your permanent veneers will only last for up to ten years before you need to replace them.
We also have other options available that can help you achieve a beautiful smile. For example, VitaSmile addresses more than just the appearance of your smile, but also its health and function. We recommend this step for patients who need more help than just veneers alone.
