We often talk about how important a smile is to your first impression. Now the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) has put together a first impression guide that shows just how important your smile is to making a great impression.

Your Smile Is Remembered

The first impression guide starts by talking about the role your smile has in making a first impression. In a survey conducted by the AACD, people were asked what they remembered most about a person after a first meeting. More of them said a smile (48%) than anything else. More than what a person said (25%), more than what they wore (9%), and more than how they smelled (8%), a smile makes a lasting impression.

The guide also notes that the smile is one of three key factors in making a visual impact, along with your posture and your weight.

Your Smile Conveys Your Personality

Since your smile will be what people remember most about you from a meeting, whether it’s a job interview or a casual personal encounter, it’s important to know what your smile is actually saying about you. Studies show that people make many conclusions about you on the basis of your smile. The AACD guide in particular cites two conclusions people may make about you. About 37% of people think you are less attractive if you have a flawed smile, while 25% of people think you are less confident if you have a flawed smile.

How to Improve Your Smile

The good news is that if you are unhappy with the appearance of your smile, there are many things that can be done to improve it. Porcelain veneers are a great treatment for many common complaints people have about their smiles, such as crooked teeth, discolored teeth, poorly shaped teeth, or gaps between teeth.

If you have many complaints about the appearance of your smile, we might recommend a cosmetic renewal, which may combine many procedures to restore and improve your smile.
