Upon reading our previous post, some people might decide to try to hide their smile in pictures instead of getting porcelain veneers or dental implants to make their smile beautiful. This is, of course, an option, and there are many strategies to try, though, really, none of them work all that well.
Hair in the Face
A hairstyle that hangs in the face is one of the most common ways to try to conceal any facial feature a person doesn’t like, be it a smile or a nose. This can partly work, but it depends on having control of your hairstyle (not always true at weddings, especially for bridesmaids), and avoiding wind that can clear your hair out of the way.
Makeup
Another thing that people sometimes try is using makeup to try to conceal certain aspects of a smile. This can work on a limited basis: discolored teeth can sometimes be made to look whiter, but crooked teeth and missing teeth, get little relief from makeup.
Gaudy Style
Flashy clothing and accessories can also be used to draw the eye away from your teeth. This works best in person, though. With time to examine photographs, people will notice many things that you can successfully distract from when meeting in person.
Hand Block
Forget all this distraction stuff: if you really want to conceal your smile, then you’ve got to really cover it up. And you can do this by putting your hand up in front of your teeth. If you’re trying to avoid showing your teeth in get-togethers, you’ll spend a lot of time with your smile behind your hand: while eating, laughing, even talking.
Camera Dodging
Some people try to avoid having to look at their smile in pictures by avoiding cameras altogether. This used to be a lot easier, but now that so many people have cameras, it’s hard to imagine you could dodge all the cell phone cameras and more.
And if you’re in the wedding party, you don’t really have the option of avoiding the camera. You’ll be called up by the photographer for your turn to have your picture taken. There’s just no getting around it: at a wedding, you will get your picture taken.
Developing a Half Smile
Have a particular part of your smile you don’t like? You could try to develop a smile that doesn’t show that part. If you’re good, you might get something that seems rakish and handsome, but it’s just as likely you’ll end up looking weird or even pained. This type of smile can seem insincere and even offensive at an occasion like a wedding where everyone is supposed to be showing support for the happy couple.
Not Smiling at All
Unfortunately, the solution that many people come up with is to not show their smile at all. They just stop smiling in public. This can lead to sadness and even depression. Your smile not only expresses happiness, it spreads happiness. When other people see you smile, they are more likely to feel happy and smile themselves. And your smile helps you feel happy, too. Receptors in your muscles send signals to your brain when you’re smiling–and those signals make you happier.
Stop Hiding Your Smile
The truth is that none of these tactics work as well as just getting an attractive smile that you won’t need to hide. And that’s where we can help.
