Porcelain veneers are a powerful cosmetic dentistry treatment that can transform your smile. They are also very flexible, and can be used to treat just one poorly formed tooth or give you a completely new smile.
Although this flexibility is good, it also means you will have to make the hard decision: how many porcelain veneers do I want?
Why Are You Getting Porcelain Veneers?
The first thing we have to figure out is how many veneers do you need to achieve the results you’re looking for. If you are trying to correct a small tooth, such as a peg lateral, then you need just one, two, or four veneers (if you want to correct small teeth on both sides and on the upper and lower arches). If you’re correcting a gap in your smile, you’ll likely need at least two.
If you are trying to correct a crooked smile using porcelain veneers, you may need anywhere from 6-20, depending on some of the other questions below.
How Happy Are You with the Rest of Your Smile?
If you think your smile is great, except for the one problem you’ve identified, then you won’t need any more than the basic number of porcelain veneers.
If you’re not happy with other aspects of your smile, you’ll probably want to get more porcelain veneers to give you a smile you will be proud to share.
Do You Stain Your Teeth?
One of the great things about porcelain veneers is that they don’t stain. They resist discoloration from food, drink, and smoking.
But this does present a problem, too. Although we will match your porcelain veneers to the color of your whitened teeth, they will remain brightly colored, while your unveneered teeth will stain over time. If you smoke, drink a lot of coffee or red wine, or eat staining foods, you may want to get more veneers to disguise this effect.
How Do You Smile?
Everyone has a unique smile style. When you smile a full, confident smile, do you show just your upper teeth or both your upper and lower teeth? How far to the side do you show off your teeth?
If you’re looking to improve your entire smile, make sure you take into account the full size of your smile.
