What is a Thread Lift?
Thread lift procedures are “mini face lifts” that use polydioxanone (PDO) threads to support sagging facial tissues by pulling them up with a barbed thread. Basically, it’s a procedure that supplements the support of your facial tissues with a thread whose barbs catch the facial soft tissue and pull it tight. Thread lifts aim to achieve similar results as a rhytidectomy or surgical facelift, but instead of cutting “excess” skin away and pulling the rest tight, you are trying to tighten the facial tissues with an added support.
While thread lifts are often touted as less invasive and painful when compared to surgical facelifts, they do come with their own set of drawbacks.
Serious Pain for Minor Lift
The procedure’s main benefit is that it’s not non-surgical, relatively short and inexpensive, and has a shorter recovery time. However, a thread lift can be quite painful. Results are generally short-lasting and minor — some studies suggest that most of the lifting effect that’s experienced is a result of swelling and inflammation. Results from a thread lift tend to last less than 2 years. And the procedure comes with a high risk of complications, including visible changes, like dimpling or bumps on the skin, and difficulty removing the threads due to extensive scarring. Although they may not be as serious as surgical facelift complications, it certainly influences whether or not the procedure is worth it.
