Even the highest quality porcelain veneers may break, chip, or fall off. While the materials veneers are made from are pretty delicate, they are also quite durable, so problems are few and far between them with the dental veneers we place on our patients. However, if you have lost a veneer, we can help.
Why a Veneer May Fall Off
With proper care, porcelain veneers can last as long as 15 years. Older veneers may fail, and veneers not adequately cared for may fail. The most common reasons dental veneers fall off are:
- Bad chewing habits
- Teeth grinding
- Poor oral hygiene
- Poor oral hygiene
- Tooth decay behind the porcelain veneer
- The veneer was not adequately bonded or properly placed
- The veneer was too old
You likely won’t be surprised if an older veneer has fallen off, but if your new veneer has failed, you will want to know why. Our cosmetic dentist, Dr. Ryan Reeves, will be able to help you understand what went wrong and how to ensure the problem doesn’t happen again.

- Collect the veneer pieces and place them in a hard, clear container; veneers may be salvageable if one large piece remains intact.
- Do not try to reattach your veneer on your own; do not use any glue in your mouth because many are toxic when ingested.
- You will likely notice increased sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks.
- You should also expect a rough sensation against your lips and tongue.
What to Expect When You Come to Our Office
- At your appointment, our dentist will examine your tooth to determine if reattaching the veneer is a good option. X-rays may be taken. If your veneer broke when it came off, you will likely need a new one because the broken one may not be reparable.
- Our dentists will determine what caused the veneer to fail, and regardless of the reason for breakage, we’ll need to address what happened to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
- If the veneer is still in good condition and fits properly, we may be able to clean it and reattach it. A composite resin may fix chips, cracks, or splinters in porcelain veneers
- In most patients, the veneer will be replaced
